Spring for Your Dreams
After a slow, soggy, introspective winter, it’s time to sow the seeds of your intentions to reap a most fulfilling life.
While popular culture has us scrambling to draft New Year resolutions in the lethargic darkness of winter, spring offers the ideal energy for seeding new goals and intentions – the feeling tones, the ways of being that fuel the realization of your desires.
This past weekend, Taproot Retreats hosted a group for our very first Spring for your Dreams mini yoga retreat and workshop. It was a magical morning designed to connect participants to nature, to their deepest dreams and highest selves, and to support them on their path to creating a most fulfilling life.
Here, I break down some of the concepts and practices we discussed to support you on that same journey.
Why Now?
March 20 is the Spring Equinox, marking the first day of Spring. It’s a day when the sun rises and sets precisely due east and due west, giving us nearly equal amounts of sunlight and nightlight. And, this year, it happens to be the same day as a supermoon – a full moon appearing when the moon is the closest it gets to Earth during its orbit.
I can’t imagine a better day to ground myself, sit in some stillness, and align myself – body, mind spirit – with the dreams I wish to shepherd into full bloom.
Your Dreams are Worth – and Needed
One of my favorite books on this topic is Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear, by Elizabeth Gilbert. She writes:
“The universe buries strange jewels deep within us all, and then stands back to see if we can find them.”
“So this, I believe, is the central question upon which all creative living hinges: Do you have the courage to bring forth the treasures that are hidden within you?”
You are a treasure trove of creative gifts. And your body is your compass. The things that light up your face, the things that give you goosebumps or make your heart swell – those are the things you were meant to do, create, share and experience in this life. And the world needs those gifts.
Not only that, but you are coded with the skills to bring those dreams into the material world. Instead of looking to universities, significant others, friends, family, your boss or online courses to deliver the roadmap, look deeper into yourself. Follow your Heart. Trust your gut. Potent advice masking as ordinary phrases.
Werk your Magick
Wizards and wands aside. Your words are magical. Your actions are magical. Your feelings, emotions, thoughts and dreams are magical.
You can take an idea – a nonmaterial, ethereal concept – and make it reality. You do it all the time. If that’s not cooler than pulling a rabbit out of a hat, I don’t know what is.
I love the way Astrologer Debra Silverman breaks down manifestation: the act of demonstrating, displaying, showing or producing. The practice of creating or making material.
She says it takes all four elements in Western Astrology:
Water: dream it, feel it, sense it
Air: speak it, write it
Earth: do it, create it, deliver it
Fire: celebrate it, release it
Carve out some time for yourself. Get cozy and comfortable. Set yourself up in a space that is inspiring and supportive to you, and make it special: light candles, heighten your senses with essential oils, make sure you won’t be interrupted.
Grab your journal to embrace your fire. Congratulate yourself: write yourself a congratulatory note highlighting a moment or accomplishment that made you really proud. Then clear out some space: what no longer serves you that must be let go in order to direct more of your energy to your next goals? Tear out that sheet of paper and throw it away, burn it, bury it – let that ish go.
Then write down and speak out loud your goal/intention. Be specific, and really dig into the feelings behind whatever it is you want to achieve and how you will live on that path to your goals. Distill your goal/intention into one clear sentence, and write it on a notecard. Place it somewhere you visit often, such as the bathroom mirror, your bedside table or a meditation space. Visit it often, aligning yourself to your dream every day.
Take action. Make it happen. You might need to hone some skills or gain some knowledge along the way, but trust your inner compass. You have so much wisdom within each cell of your body. You can do this!
